Winter Solstice (Actors Touring Company)

Sophie recently cast the ATC (Actors Touring Company) UK tour of Winter Solstice, written by Roland Schimmelpfennig.. Originally directed by Ramin Gray for the Orange Tree Theatre; this revival was directed by ATC Associate Director, Alice Malin.

Christmas Eve.
Bettina and her husband Albert aren’t happy.
Bettina’s mother is staying for the holidays.
Which is awkward.
Not least because Bettina’s mother met a man on the train.
And now she’s invited him around for drinks…

Family, betrayal and the inescapable presence of the past reverberate through the UK premiere of Roland Schimmelpfennig’s razor-sharp comedy.

Previous plays include The Golden Dragon and Arabian Night, both presented by Actors Touring Company.

Schimmelpfennig is the most performed playwright in Germany and one of the country’s most exciting original voices, with productions of his work worldwide in over 40 countries.

The Scotsman, Joyce Macmillan:

'There’s no faulting Malin’s fine cast; and with Felix Hayes in terrific form as the clever and compromised Albert, and Marian McLoughlin acting up a storm as the wickedly complicit Corinna, Winter Solstice makes for a riveting two hours of theatre, for those minded to look beyond its satirical surface to the troubling questions beneath.'

British Theatre Guide, Martin Thomasson:

'The character of Rudolph certainly offers most to an actor and Beames exploits it to the full. His Rudolph is like Black Forest gateau laced with cyanide - sometimes delicious, sometimes sickly sweet but, ultimately, life-threatening.

Certainly, Winter Solstice is a play of ideas and a play which sends the audience home pondering important matters is one which earns it place in our theatres.'
